They're Repeating to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and this week a study predicted his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – really, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom have business with the government.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured through connection to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it imply pretending the worst about the nation and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a combination that serious US believers ought to accept.
